Quick Safety Checklist

Before You Start a Car That Has Been Parked for a Long Time

Take a few minutes to inspect the vehicle properly before turning the key. Starting a car that has been sitting for months or years without checking it first can cause serious damage.

Outside the Vehicle

  • Check under the car for oil, coolant, brake fluid, or fuel leaks
  • Inspect tires for low pressure, cracks, or flat spots
  • Look for signs of rust or damaged wiring
  • Check for rodent nests around the engine or underneath the car
  • Ensure no debris is blocking the exhaust pipe

Under the Hood

  • Check engine oil level and condition
  • Check coolant level
  • Inspect battery terminals for corrosion
  • Look for cracked or brittle hoses and belts
  • Check for loose wires or obvious damage
  • Smell for strong fuel odors

Before Starting

  • Make sure the battery is charged properly
  • Turn the key to ON first and listen for the fuel pump
  • Check if dashboard warning lights stay on
  • Do not rev the engine immediately after starting
  • Allow the engine to idle for a few minutes

After Starting

  • Watch engine temperature carefully
  • Listen for knocking, squealing, or unusual noises
  • Test brakes before driving
  • Check that lights, indicators, and wipers work properly
  • Drive slowly at first and monitor how the vehicle responds

Important

Even if the car starts normally, hidden issues may still exist

Especially with brakes, fuel systems, tires, and rubber components. If your vehicle has been parked for a long period, we recommend a full inspection before regular driving.
